He played for the G League Ignite.... it's not really a normal team. Looking at their wins and losses doesn't make much sense generally, but especially when you're looking at a specific player on the team. He was the youngest G League player in history in his first game, and he scored points his second game. He improved his stats across the board (except FG%) in his second year out of high school. He also played well enough against Wambanyana (28 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds in 28 minutes) that he said of Scoot, "Out of all the prospects I've heard about in our class, I think he's my favorite one... I think he's the most reliable that I've seen. He's really a great player... If I was never born, I think he would deserve the first spot." So, yeah. He was the best PG coming out of high school, but he's played at a high level of competition and has excelled.
Think Amen is the correct choice at 3, I don’t think Scoot is there at 3. I am not sold on Miller (I wasn’t sold on the Grant move either so I apparently know nothing)
Call me crazy, but if Miller does get taken at two(Which I think he will) I really do not think we need another guard to develop here. Need forward help so in that case at 3, if we keep it, I would take Jarace Walker. Big, strong, physical, and has a nice shooting touch. Just my two cents.
Jarace is my favorite player in this draft but if we want him we might as well trade down with Orlando and pick up 6, 11 and possibly Bol and one of their young but not too young guards either Suggs or Anthony to be our backup PG... Bol will fit into one TPE and the guard will fit into the other. All of this said, Dame wouldn't be down with Jarace as our big addition so we'd probably look to trade him too. 3 is either going to be traded for an all star level player or better or Dame is going to have that "other conversation" with Joe... I think Joe probably has shit lined up for all sorts of scenarios and most of them probably have us placating Dame and therefore becoming much more competitive.
Walker is a physical freak. For a guy who measured 6'6.5" 248lbs and a 7'2.5" wingspan at the combine, dude's agility and jumping measurements were that of an athletic 2 guard. A smart versatile defender who anticipates plays before they happen, he's big enough to spend some time at 5. I doubt he'll ever be a big scorer as that doesn't seem his mentality, but the form on his J looks reasonable and he made 3's at a 35% clip. For a Big, he should be a very good secondary playmaker as he's got both a handle and sees the court well as a passer. Would be a great guy to pick and roll Shaedon with. Of course there are off court things that we often don't hear about that can raise and lower a prospect's potential, but man he looks like a nice prospect. I'm glad Portland has had him in. STOMP
Telfair was two or three inches shorter than Scoot and was barely a lottery-level prospect and had never played professionally for two years before being drafted, but otherwise... yeah. Exactly the same.
I don't know that we need an article written 18 years after the draft when we can just look at the actual draft: That's barely in the lottery. And if PatterNash weren't so terrible, he might not have gone that high (many of us wanted Jefferson (edited from "Perkins" as I had a brain cramp), you may recall). The dude was a PG in NYC, and he was very good in high school. That is lots of built-in hype. Scoot Henderson has almost nothing in common with Telfair. You're asking where the "hype" about Scoop is coming from, and I'm telling you, and you're bringing up some small high school phenom from 20 years ago that barely was chosen in the lottery. I don't get it.
I want Walker on this team. Guy loves rebounding and playing defense. Not at 3 though. Guess it doesn’t really matter
What was the competition like in the G League and when the put up those stats vs Wambanyana? In short, I don't get the Scoot hype, at all!
Exactly, I just don't understand the hype surrounding him at all. He looks to be Marcus Smart type of guy minus the defense and hustle.
Telfair was regarded as either #1 or #2 (behind LEBRON JAMES) in his high school class. And that article has him listed as "honorable mention" greatest high school prospect OF ALL TIME. Now, of course he didn't play in the G-League, but having seen Jalen Green, you'll forgive me if I don't get all excited at somebody who doesn't even shoot that great in the G-League.
I love it how people refuse to pick the guy they want just because they're afraid all the draft prognosticators will laugh at them for taking him "too high". I love people like Sam Presti who just don't give a fuck. Also James Jones taking Cam Johnson when everyone thought he was way too old and had him much lower. If you like the guy, don't fuck around hoping to trade with someone who picks him lower - reward him with a better contract by taking him at the pick you have.
Sounds like Justice Winslow. And I mean that as a compliment - I like Winslow (more than I like Grant, tbh), he's just never healthy.
The fact is that taking Walker at 3 wouldn't make any sense. You could trade down and get him at 6 and probably get pick 11 too. Or maybe you trade down to 5 if your worried he'll go there and probably get Jalen Duren to go with him in your front court. It's not because people are afraid to piss off the prognosticators that they don't stretch for a prospect early in the lotto, it's because you have to maximize the value of the pick you have.
I think both Miller and Henderson are a tier above him. Will be asinine to pass on either for a vet wing
The G League is presumably the second-best level of competition in the hemisphere, since it's full of guys that were really good in college, while college is just full of guys playing in college. Obviously there are awesome players potentially in every league, but the G League is full of adults, unlike college and OTE.
