Paul Allen should have opened up his wallet and paid LBJ whatever it takes If it's $30 Million/yr for five years then so be it. You know we would have won at least two championships and made our money back.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I am sure paul would have been willing. How do we know he didn't try? Lebron would have to have been truly interested in coming here.

I really don’t know the answer to this, but what’s stopping PA from going to Phil Knight and saying hey tell Lebron if he comes to Portland he’ll get a billion dollar Nike deal.
Then I’ll have a friend buy some art from you for a billion dollars.

He already has a billion dollar shoe deal. He doesn't need to come to Portland for that.

C'mon Lanny, you know that's not how the CBA works.
Apparently not. Surprised people aren't killing the OP. If this thread were started by others, they'd get laughed out of the forum.

Yes. The only reason Lebron isn't here is because Paul Allen would not offer him 30 million.

Is see you're point and that Paul would be fine in paying penalty tax. I think the only way you could entice Lebron to entertain PDX would have been a gentlemen agreement for part ownership once he retired.
That could still be a possibility as James has at least 5 years left. He's all about new business ventures and he's already indicated he'd like to own a team.

He has to WANT to come to Portland

Most players don't
Exactly.

There were compelling reasons for LeBron to go to Miami, to go back to Cleveland, and to sign with LA.

The guy plays wherever he wants. I can't think of a single compelling reason for LeBron to choose Portland over a half a dozen other more lucrative options.

Paul should have married LeBron's mom back when LeBron was just a wee lad.

Where was the foresight Paul!?!?!

I am going to give the benefit of the doubt here and say that Lanny is putting you all on like his Karaoke post in the OT section.

CBA requires "cap space" to sign any player, but especially Lebron. We're over the cap.

He'd have to "want" to come to Portland AND he'd have had to sign for $5.3M first year. Guess what, he didn't!!
So? Pay the penalty.

@Lanny... You know I love you bud....

This is not a good thread bro. Lol.
This advice does no one any good unless it's coupled with some explicit reasoning.

Lanny, there is no penalty to just pay. The most the Blazers could offer was $5.3 million. There is no possible way to give LeBron $30 million. Even if it were possible, we could only offer the same as Philly or LAL could so he'd still have to choose us over them which wasn't going to happen.

You started a thread about something that isn't possible and are now getting defensive about it. This isn't the old days where teams could just pay whatever. There are rules.
