    Still ain't a bad place to live/work...

America’s best places to live in 2021

    7. Nashville, Tennessee

    Affordability: 7 out of 10
    Education: 7 out of 10
Job market: 8 out of 10
    Safety: 5 out of 10
    Wellness: 6 out of 10

    Biggest upside: Job market
    Biggest downside: Rising housing costs

Nashville has already exported its famous local specialty, hot chicken, to loads of restaurants around the U.S., and plenty are deciding to go straight to the source to try the culinary delight. Of course, they’re coming for more than a recipe. The city’s music industry, coupled with big employment opportunities in healthcare, education and insurance, make the city an ideal place to work and play (or just listen).

The city has recently welcomed the major addition of Amazon’s East Coast logistics hub, a project that will create 5,000 jobs. While the city, like others, felt the fallout of COVID-19, its pre-pandemic reputation makes it likely that the lights of Broadway will be just as bright in the near future.

The streets are being taken over by Antifa! It's like a war zone! Pretty soon we will be writing our wives and girlfriends like they did during WW1!

Funny you. At any rate, Portland appears to stand out in these types of happenings, do they not?

I guess? It also stands out as one of the areas that people who don't live here seem to think they know better than those who do.

Sure, I suppose. We live in a global/digital glass house. Everyone seems to know, and comment on, the goings-on of everyone else.

Well, after all, this is a Portland-based site....grew up in, and (yes,, still) proud to call my birthplace. The deal is, Portland (entire lack of) leadership has been declining for years. You get what you get....and it's a sad statement in this case.

Funny, the people of Portland voted to reelect the mayor that you (who lives 2600 miles away) cannot abide. Maybe they know something you don’t? What a concept.......

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I'm sure it's a great place to live if you're a straight white man. The grading rubric kind of leaves out the big problems of Tennessee and the South in general.

As you may know, we're planning to have 3 residences in the next few years - Tennessee, Florida, Bend, OR - and live approximately 4 months a year in each. That probably covers a number of socio-dynamics.

Vacation rental. That will be an extended family purchase. My niece just told me that if you purchase a place in the Azores, it automatically qualifies you for a passport to all EU countries. Sweet deal. We can get a place there for under $300k. 5 hour non-stop flight from Boston.

    Well, looky here....

More People Moved to Tennessee in 2020 Than Any Other State, According to a New Report

    https://people.com/home/tennessee-welcomed-more-residents-any-state-2020-u-haul/

More people moved to Tennessee than any other U.S. state last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, new data collected by U-Haul shows.

According to a press release, the moving equipment rental company found that The Volunteer State saw the largest net gain of the company's trucks crossing its borders during 2020. This marks the first time Tennessee was the top U-Haul growth state, having ranked 12th in 2019.

One-way U-Haul users bound for Tennessee increased 12 percent year-over-year, while trucks leaving increased 9 percent. Arriving trucks made up 50.6 percent of one-way U-Haul users in the state, according to the company.

To create its migration trends report each year, U-Haul calculates the net gain of U-Haul trucks entering a state versus leaving a state in the same year. The data is compiled from over 2 million one-way U-Haul truck customer transactions, the company said.

East and Central Tennessee experienced the biggest gains in U-Haul arrivals, while the cities seeing the biggest population growth included Knoxville, the Tri-Cities (the region of Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol), Cookeville, Clarksville, Cleveland, Murfreesboro and Maryville.

Texas, which had the highest U-Haul migration growth from 2016 to 2018, landed in second place for 2020, while Florida, which took the top spot in 2019, dropped down to third place.

Ohio, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia rounded out the top 10 states for 2020.

On the flip side, California ranked last "by a wide margin," becoming the state with the greatest net loss of U-Haul trucks. The Golden State has ranked 48th or lower since 2016, while Illinois, which came in second-to-last in 2020, has been 49th or 50th since U-Haul began its ranking in 2015.

"I'm seeing a lot of people from California move (to Tennessee) because they're attracted to our lifestyle," said Jeff Porter, U-Haul Company of Nashville president, in a press release. "Tennessee has no income tax and is very business-friendly. There are plenty of jobs. People and companies are taking note. Places like Nashville, Murfreesboro and Clarksville are attracting tons of new residents."

He added, "Nashville is ever-growing, and even the era of COVID-19 isn't slowing that. We were seeing movement before the virus hit, but I think the situation has pushed a lot more people away from the West Coast to our state."

U-Haul also noted that while migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the company asserts that its growth data is an effective gauge of how well cities and states are attracting and maintaining residents.
