EUHARLEE, Ga. — The family of a 17-year-old shot and killed by a Euharlee police officer has hired an attorney, and they say he had a remote control in his hand. They say it was not a gun.

Christopher Roupe, 17, was in the ROTC at Woodland High School and wanted to join the Marines. His friends said he looked after them.

“He was a good kid. He always hung out with me and he took up for me,” said William Corson.

Roupe's young life ended Friday night when Euharlee police officers showed up at the door of his home in the Eagle View Mobile Home Park to serve a probation violation warrant for his father.

A female police officer told GBI investigators that Roupe pointed a gun at her when he opened the door.

“It just doesn't add up,” said Cole Law who is representing the Roupe family.

Law said Roupe was about to watch a movie.

“We don't know where that statement came from. The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest,” Law said.

Neighbors said they ran to the home after they heard the shot.

“When we got up there, they said there was a Wii remote in his hand and she shot him,” said Tia Howard, who lives a few doors down.

Neighbor Ken Yates said he saw the female officer moments after the fatal shot.

“This is tragic. She came out of this house. She put her head in her hands and she was sobbing. Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighborhood buddies,” said Yates.

The officer is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.

The GBI said the autopsy is complete, and they will turn over evidence to Cherokee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Rosemary Greene’s office.

The funeral for Roupe is planned for Friday.

Fuck DA po-lice

Stories like these make me feel paranoid instead of protected when a copcar drives by.

You should write headlines for MSNBC.com...

Would you prefer "Teen shot and killed for opening door", or "Teen shot and killed because father violated probation", or...?

Fatal non-accidental mistakes with deadly weapons are generally classified as murder.

Unless you have a badge.
My problem is with the wording of it, saying he was "killed... ...for having Wii controller in hand." He wasn't shot for having a Wii controller in his hand, he was (allegedly) shot because the cop thought he had a gun in his hand.

Just like that Occupy dingbat who was suing the cops because she got pepper-sprayed in the face. She wasn't sprayed for protesting like a shitload of headlines said, she was sprayed for being an asshole.

As far as I know, it's not illegal to be an asshole though.

"Officer kills teen after mistaking Wii controller for gun". Satisfactory?

the problem I (and most) have is with the minimization of the officer's responsibility in situations such as these. If it's anyone else mistaking an innocuous object for a weapon, the shooter is arrested immediately. Because it's a police officer, she's put on paid leave. The people who are charged with enforcing our laws and ensuring our safety should be held to a higher standard than the general public, but instead we generally see the opposite.

The way I feel about it is simple.

Our police are being improperly trained in how to deal with these situations. It should NEVER be shoot first, ask questions later. I get that their lives are on the line, but this isn't a combat situation. Not everyone around you should be considered hostile.

Part of the problem is that we have an extremely high number of former military in law enforcement. When you have spent four or five years in the armed services, and you have trained regularly on one SOP/Rules of engagement, I highly doubt that six months of DPSST training is going to change how your muscle memory works. Those are two completely different types of thinking. One is policing your own people. The other is operating in a hostile environment where you have no idea when a threat might present itself. I feel we should either stop hiring military to police our people, OR extend the training period and train on a more regular basis.

pic of the teen. kind of looks special needs....

the police said it was a BB gun. Maybe it was a wii controller that was shaped like a gun? sounds weird though, so many contradictions in everything.

gut feeling tells me the female cop freaked out and fired without provocation.

Did the cop go to the door with her weapon drawn? If she had time to unholster, aim and shoot - how did she not have time to realize the kid was holding a harmless object?

Did the Dad get arrested right after I assume? Wtf man, fucking pigs

Who decides the training methods? Who decides rules of engagement, how fast a policeman should shoot, whether to aim to kill or at legs?

The FBI. The President chooses the FBI Director. Under Carter, rules of when to draw your gun were more restrictive. Then Reagan was elected and it's been War on Crime ever since.

Conservatives hate Carter.

Geez, who knows what happened. A vid came out last year of police who shot a man they were arresting, they said he was charging at them with a knife, but the video shows he was not, he was probably 10 feet away and not moving towards them and they just dropped him.

Imagine the media shit storm if this guy had been black.

Jesus, google Dallas Police and you find all kinds of madness. They apparently get a thrill out of killing people!

And the only consequence is that they get fired? I understand that they need the ability to use force, but this is criminal.
Some news reports say that the officer in the Bennett shooting was charged with a felony. But the Dallas Police Chief has implemented a new rule that an officer can wait 72 hours before writing a report when they shoot someone. Perhaps so they can see if video disputing their lie comes out??? What a bunch of bullshit!
