Ben Carson: Egyptian pyramids were grain stores, not pharaohs' tombs
Egypt’s pyramids were built by the biblical Joseph to store grain and were not, as archaeologists believe, tombs for pharaohs, Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carsonhas said.

The retired neurosurgeon, who is seeking his party’s nomination for the White House, made these remarks in a 1998 address at Andrews University, a Michigan school associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, to which he belongs, in a video posted on Buzzfeed on Wednesday.

The church is a conservative evangelical Christian one.

In this 1998 speech, Ben Carson says the pyramids in Egypt were built to store grain
“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson – who last week overtook Republican rival Donald Trump for the first time in a national poll – told graduates in his address.

“Now all the archeologists think that they were made for the pharaohs’ graves. But, you know, it would have to be something awfully big if you stop and think about it.

“And I don’t think it’d just disappear over the course of time to store that much grain.”

Asked on Wednesday if he still held these views, Carson told CBS News: “It’s still my belief, yes.”

Speaking to MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Thursday, rival Republican Trump said: “He’s informed me about the pyramids. I think I’ll have to put that in my repertoire about Ben. That was a strange deal.”

In his 1998 address, Carson said: “And when you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons.

“And various of scientists have said, ‘Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how, you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you’.”

Six controversial views from the good doctor.
In the old testament book of Genesis, Joseph, one of the 12 sons of Jacob, was said to have “stored up grain in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped measuring it, for it was beyond measure”.

After seven years of plenty, the story in Genesis says, Egypt suffered seven years of famine, during which Joseph was able to feed the people with the grain he had stored.

Carson has spoken often about his faith, saying recently of his critics: “They say, ‘Carson, you know, how can you be a surgeon, a neurosurgeon, and believe that God created the Earth, and not believe in evolution, which is the basis of all knowledge and all science?’ …

“But I do believe God created us, and I did just fine … And in fact, the more you know about God, and the deeper your relationship with God, I think the more intricate becomes your knowledge of the way things work, including the human body.”

Most pyramids are 99% solid and weigh millions of tons. Assuming he knew that he would have to be pretty damn insane to still claim they were grain storage facilities. He seems to be more of a willfully ignorant moron.

There's this kind of magic that allowed Joseph to store infinite amount of grain in a limited space.

Regardless if you being in, what you call magic or how believers call acts of God, there is insurmountable evidence they are tombs. There is mummified bodies, treasure and even writing stating this.

And the reality is that there are no writings that say they stored grain. In fact, there is nothing in the Bible even that talks about these pyramids being grain storages. His claim is completely ludicrous.

The Mortuary Temple, Serdab, Northern Courtyard and the West Mounds of the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, Egypt

North of the mortuary temple and the serdab courtyard is the north courtyard, which covers almost a third of the entireDjosercomplex. This area has not yet been carefully investigated. However, in the northern part of these grounds, symbolic storehouses were found with round openings in their roofs through which grain was poured. There was also a group of chapels that are reminiscent of the buildings in the sed festival courtyard. On the northern edge of the complex, along its north-south axis, from the inner wall of the northern wing of the enclosure wall, is a raised platform accessed by a stairway ramp. Above, on the platform, there is a depression measuring about eight meters square and a few centimeters deep. This enigmatic structure has led to an interesting and still unconcluded debate among Egyptologists.

...

Once again, the investigation of the west mounds is not yet complete, but excavations here have shown that there are no chambers in their superstructures. Besides size, the mounds also differ from each other in appearance.Lauerthought the easternmost had a flat roof, whereas the middle one had a gentle arched roof. The slightly inclined side walls were decorated with niches, while five shafts and staircases provided access to the substructure, which is composed of long, partly destroyed corridors and projecting side chambers. In some sections, a large number of fragments of stone vessels were found, together with grains (barley and wheat) and dried fruit.

...

Most Egyptologists currently seem to believe that this was a storage area more than anything else, which would explain the pottery fragments and grain found in the substructure.

Did they use their spaceships to fly the grain up 300 ft.?

I think it's unclear if Carson meant ALL of the pyramids or just the early ones or even the first one.

You'd also have to consider when Joseph lived in relation to when and which pyramids were built.

If he's in agreement with the egyptologists, some people out to get him have egg on their faces.

He is referring to this.

As for the pyramids with storage... I seem to remember that inside the tombs were food, treasure and various other items needed for the Pharaoh to use in his afterlife. Of course there would be pottery that carried food and grain because they are what the ancient Egyptians believed was needed for their afterlife.

No treasure has been found in the pyramids. They were long ago looted.

He said "pyramids" not "tombs."
Tut is an example of the burial process. The reason why it wasn't looted was because no one really knew it was a pharaohs tomb. But as I've clearly explained, the burial process includes food, treasure and items for the afterlife. All these were on the hieroglyphs in the pyramids and in other tombs.

I know you are trying to play devil's advocate Denny, but I know damn well you don't believe Carson. Don't act like he's got a point when there has been proof of HUGE grain silos that were on the video.

What are you babbling about?

No loot ever found in pyramids. You argued against that using the example of Tut's tomb, which isn't a pyramid.

Then you find quibble with me because I say Carson may have a point if he was talking about the pyramid in the video.

However, if he thinks all the pyramids were grain silos, he's whacko. And the alien thing is just plain strange.

So you are saying there is evidence that the pharaohs buried in pyramids had no treasure?

No. The pyramids were looted by grave robbers.

Tut's tomb was well hidden and grave robbers never found it before it was discovered by a scientist.

Carson says Joseph built the (first) pyramid to store grain. It looks like it was built, at least in part, to store grain. If anything, it appears that grain storage was a prominent feature. It could well be that burial sites were not the initial purpose of the very first pyramid or two. It isn't unreasonable that the first was built as a temple and to store grain and was converted to a tomb.

So, Denny, your argument about Carson seems to be that he's really really bad at the English language. He says "no involvement" when he means "I only endorsed their product for money, I didn't control their decisions" and he means "the first pyramid" when he says "pyramids".

Could be, but he seems fairly articulate. It might be a simpler explanation to conclude that he actually means what he says, and thus he's both crazy and a liar. But you could be right, I'm not ruling it out.

Jeezus Denny. In the 1998 video he is obviously speaking generally about "the pyramids". Even says "large" area needed - he is obviously not referring to small symbolic storage areas in one specific temple.

No, my argument is he is basing his belief about Joseph and the pyramids on something that archaeology verifies. But he was very broad in suggesting maybe all the pyramids were created as grain stores, which is obviously not true. However, he did say the pyramids built by Joseph, so he may actually be on solid ground here.

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,” Carson – who last week overtook Republican rival Donald Trump for the first time in a national poll – told graduates in his address.

The pyramids were built over many generations. Joseph could not have been alive for all those generations. So which of the pyramids are the ones that Joseph built? - the answer is not all of them, but certainly the one that did have grain stores.

Watch the video Mags posted.

If the archaeology doesn't agree with the story, please feel free to provide the detail.

And see my previous post. This bit:

He was actually specific about which pyramids - the one(s) Joseph built.
