That's kind of my point. No other playmakers means more pressure and too many minutes for Scoot.

If you have a good coaching staff and great trainers you get those "in-game" type reps everyday. You can drill that.

Unfortunately I don't think Portland has that. And (if this kind of shooting continues for more than a short time) it appears that Scoot has not gone out and hired somebody to help him do that.

Just like last night, he was the only guy on the court that could create. What exacerbates his production is the fact that Chauncey's offense has turned into this mix of pick &rolls and dribble handoffs. No sets, no design, just freelance. You tell me who is gonna create offense besides Scoot. Ayton? Toumani? Grant? Murray? Those are the other 4 starters last night. Maybe Clingan? Rupert? Walker? Wreath? The next best is Banton. A shoot first, second and third backup PG. Can't believe anyone would judge him by stats in this situation.

Simons, Sharpe and Grant can get their own shot anytime they want. If Scoot would just get better and picking his shots, and playing within the offense, his percentages would probably go up, and also, even if they are below average, it wouldn't hurt the team as much.

A lot of good PGs in NBA history only took 11 shots a game, as they focused on being distributers, but Scoot seems to be trying to be an explosive scorer.
 
Assuming Scoot continues to struggle, the FO faces a dilemma: blame Scoot or blame Chauncey. I suspect their solution will be "do nothing and just be glad we're losing".
 
There are two things that I think are keeping Scoot from being an all star level PG: a left hand and decision making. Without the left hand he could still be a high level starting PG in the league. It's the decision making. Dude has no business pulling up for threes off of the dribble, dude has plenty of solid passes and even spectacular ones he could be making without attempting ones that are impossible, dude doesn't have the ability to make a solid decision about if the lane is open or closed and on top of that and I guess this isn't decision making but fits in with the general theme of BBIQ... the dude needs to maintain concentration on every play on both ends.

The guy has the physical tools and skills to be a more physically imposing Chris Paul but CP3 is one of the smartest players in the history of the league... can Scoot get his head on a level that allows him to capitalize on his talent and the skills he has developed and has the potential to continue to develop? I'm really not sure. Frustrating to see the guy making the same mistakes he was making last season but if you can't see the potential there it's either because you don't want to/are a hopeless pessimist or you don't know what you're looking at.

I see the potential, but I also see the lack of notable progress. He improved over the season last year but still makes a ton of poor decisions and is highly inconsistent.

I have some hope still but it has been muted almost to the point of non-existence.
 
Scoot is going to take a few years to have an overall where he improves decision making, turnovers, left hand and shooting. He didnt play his senior in HS because he jumped to the G league. It's going to take time for him learn basics he's missed out on. Sure he's athletic but he just not bee coached hard with discipline where he learns.

That G league team really screwed him up.
 
Did he hang around the gym in Portland over the summer? I sure didn't read so. Most guys do, when between their rookie and 2nd years.

As I wrote before, I consider Little Scooter a child. He is undisciplined and conceited. He smiles like Dennis the Menace, but he is no menace to any player.

This is my concern. That the rumors about him working hard everyday... Were made up...

Sincerely hoping that is not the case...

He has his own gym dad built for him and others in family.

I know Billups has no system to teach him, but I also suspect Scooter is a little uncoachable. That's why you guys post that it will take him several years.

It's a perfect storm between a lazy conceited overconfident player and a dumbshit coach who took years to develop as a player, finally becoming what scouts saw when they drafted him. HOF, what a joke. The coach is mentally slow, so he doesn't know how to demand his player to get up to speed.

That's what people who knew him and said he was a sure thing said about him. He was a hard worker, in the gym everyday, Loved the process. Loved the grind.

This is obviously not the case to the extent they were talking about.

*Edit* Steve Nash also took a while. I don't think he was mentally slow.

haha, I was going to say the same but you beat me to it. As I said before, someone can practice all off season all they want, when it comes to in game situations, it's more about confidence and letting the game come to you, especially for young players, and Scoot is 21 with no college experience.

Let's look at Dame. We all agree Dame is/was a workaholic, but yet, after 4 years of college ball, he never shoot better than 43.4% FG of his first 4 years, and on average was at about 42.8% over his first 4 seasons. Dame has also only shot over 40% from 3's once in his career...

It's not as easy as getting reps up automatically = better shooting %

Let's look at another one, our very own Deni Avjija.

First 3 seasons, his FG was 41.7%, 43.2% and 43.7%

His 3pt% in his first 3 years, 31.5%, 31.7 and 29.7%.

And last year was his 4 seasons in the league and his % shot up to FG - 50.6% and 3p% - 37.4%

You guys need to give Scoot a few more years at worst, but you guys have no patience and only want to hate on the kid.

As said before, I really wonder how many of you here have played basketball in any competitive settings or heck even touched a basketball with the things that get said on here lol.
 
Scoot is young enough to be streaky deaky at times. He's got the pressure of following Damian Lillard as the point guard and he's not even close to that but he has the swagger already. This year will be make or break for Scoot as a starter. He has to earn it. So far it's a crap shoot after two games.

I won’t go into anything, but you couldn't not be MORE wrong about this kid if you tried. Please reconsider your feelings about this young man. If there is a player on this roster you should wish to succeed it’s this kid.

Well, I liked it more as a "I get what you're saying" kind of thing. Not necessarily an "I agree with all of this" kind of thing.

Scoot has time. He just needs to put in the work. If he does he'll be just fine.
 
Just blows my mind on here what people say about these people they don’t even know. I remember people on here calling Stotts a fucking idiot. Guy last night was calling Scoot a motherfucker. This person is saying scoot is a lazy and concited……. Simply because after 60 games he hasn’t lived up to their expectations during this franchises’ transition into tank mode.
Henderson has blown me away in one year with his maturity and demeanor. Quality kid raised the right way. Proud to have him represent this franchise. I’m giving him a couple seasons to get to where I think he should be. Regardless, I’ll root for him.

Riverman had better word choice than me. From now on, I'll substitute "too much swagger, not enough dog" for "lazy and conceited."

Too much childish jersey-pulling celebration in achieving easy routine things, not enough self-sacrificing desperation to make the league. Last year, Camara never smiled. Now that he knows he's cemented his place, he smiles. Let's see Henderson achieve something before having the "I have arrived" attitude. If he had more humble Lillard-like talk off-court, feeling an almost unsurmountable challenge, he'd achieve more on-court.

The Coach: Several articles said that in any non-Wemby draft, he'd be pick #1. He was anointed King to early. Under a tougher coach, say Thibs, he'd have to earn it. Part of the blame for his playing way, way beneath expectations is a lack of demands from current and previous coaches. The good news is that he stopped making stupid play after bonehead play, like last season. In the Oct. 13 game, he passed or turnovered as carelessly as Raymond Felton only a few times. So he's improving, but he'd improve faster under a coach who applies more pressure. I hope he doesn't take many years to "arrive" like Billups did.
 
The strategy to lose for several seasons: To succeed, our strategy assumes that we draft a high pick, a star, after each horrible season. And it requires that that player improves to the high level expected.

If we get #3 in what some called the strongest draft ever, and he doesn't become top-5 at his position, then why pursue this strategy to lose? If it doesn't pay off, we should have just conventionally tried to win.

So there's a lot at stake here...the whole strategy. I want to get great, not mediocre, results in every single draft from this purgatory of suffering in self-inflicted pain.

Last season, I sometimes turned off blowouts soon after halftime. Twiddling my thumbs would have been more entertaining. This has been going on for 3 years, and guys like HCP kneejerk that we have to give Little Scooter another 2 years of improvement. (He's already had 1 year, so that means he will "arrive" at the start of his 4th year.) Long waits double the length of the purgatory. Add the past 3 tanking years, plus wait 2 more for the 2024 pick, plus wait a year or two more for the 2025 pick to show anything, plus the 2026 pick will suck a few years...It's just too much to ask from a fanbase.

Nobody of any consequence ever said that about 2023. I would say "don't be ridiculous", but that would be like telling a scorpion not to sting.
 
This years draft is a lot better then Scoot’s draft class except for Wemby. Wemby is in a different level. IMO there is at least 4-6 players better than anybody except Wemby in that draft. It might even be more than 4-6 players better but we will have to wait and see. If we get a top 3 pick in this years draft we should get a great player.

You don't need to get a star every time. In fact, you are almost certainly going to miss. But the data tells us that you will get a star in 5 or 6 tries, and you'll almost certainly have very good starters as well. Now you have built a team with enough talent to contend with proper management, ownership, and coaching.

I think we need another season or two of tanking after this season unless we somehow already have 3 future legitimate championship caliber starters on our roster and draft another Dame caliber star or better in the upcoming draft. Or if we can turn Simons, Grant, or Ayton into picks or young players who fit one of those bills (though, Ayton may already fit the bill if his head is right). If we can get a star in the upcoming draft and trade those guys for other Camara level guys... we might be cooking.

But I don't think we have the star on our roster yet. Unless Sharpe can be healthy and show a killer instinct.

If we do take Wemby out of the equation, last year's draft might also end up being better. Not saying it was a good draft just that the Scoot draft (other than Wemby) was not that great either for the other 29 teams.

I don't really care about crow or other insults. If they become championship contenders with what we have that would be awesome.

I think it would be a mistake to think we have enough assets on the roster to build a contender yet. That's a risk I'd rather not take yet.

I agree that we have more talent than we realize. I'd like us to expect faster improvement, and not settle for any #3 pick (regardless of the quality of his draft, an irrelevant argument) taking years to become starter quality.

Billups and the tanking started 3 years ago. If the tanking campaign takes 5 years, then we have 2 years left. The 5-year plan is now a 2-year plan. It's later than we think.

We've never really detailed the plan...including contingencies for if it isn't working after 3 years, after 4 years, after 5 years, etc. How much improvement in each high pick's playing do we need to see 1 year after drafting him, 2 years, 3 years, etc. We've never fleshed it all out. Probably needs its own thread, but that would just devolve into Platypus-like insults.
