I hope Scoot develops into a non-shoot first PG. I'm getting tired of that act. I'd like to see him become more of a Rod Strickland type PG.
scoot is far from a shoot first pg. he’s simply shooting to go through the motions to improve that facet and shut all you guys up finally
THAT is what should be his strength. HOWEVER (a) it requires playing at a breakneck pace or being lucky in transition, and (b) his finishing AND his handle are currently weak, making instances like that rarer than we'd like.
a statistical comparison after only 2 games is meaningless....but that won't stop me: PER: Ant 8.8....Scoot 18.6 TS%: Ant .511....Scoot .589 RebRate: Ant 2.2%....Scoot 4.5% AstRate: Ant 24.1%....Scoot 35.0% TrnRate: Ant 19.1%....Scoot 13.7% winshare/48: Ant -.080....Scoot +.077 OBPM: Ant -2.7....Scoot +1.2 DBPM: Ant -4.6....Scoot -1.3 BPM: Ant -7.3....Scoot -0.1 wrong guy starting?
I think we agree, but there is an important distinction. It sounds crazy, but I want Scoot to be a shoot-first PG, just not an outside shoot-first, but an inside shoot-first. Way too often, I've seen Scoot get into the paint and the defense knew he we going to pass, which all too often turned into a turnover. Scoot's recent success has occurred because he's now choosing drive-and-score. When the defense commits, then he has the option of drive-and-dish. While I can't stand Russell Westbrook, I think Scoot can become RW without the ego. That's is drive into the lane. If the defense stops him, dish. Otherwise, score the ball. RW routinely racked up double digit assists using this method. Scoot can too. Of course, I don't think Scoot should be a shoot-from-3-first PG, nobody does.
100%. The first option should always be score for the point guard. Always. That gets your teammates open and allows them to score easier.
Chauncey Billups is HOF, but looking at his numbers (as he became an efficient free throw shooter and 3 pt shooter) … and ALL the teams he played on … he’s been through what Scoot MAY have to go through. Change of pace with the ball and finishing are extremely important for Scoot moving forward for efficiency, but becoming a set shot 3 point shooter with a high % on free throws will open up the inside work. I don’t want Scoot as a high usage, pound the rock guy. Nope. And I don’t want a Bledsoe scoring guard. Scoot as a charismatic, high energy, team-player-PG and leader of the team … he has an IT factor for that role. Will his skills develop?
Isn't it a bit worrying that Chauncey is literally the only example in the history of the NBA that is an optimistic comparison for Scoot? Doesn't that paint a pretty bleak picture of his chances (or chaunces)?
I know...I just went a little different direction by the way, IMO, per 100 possessions is a better gauge and making it career numbers is deceptive because Simons had 3 low usage seasons as a late rotation player his first 3 seasons so that heavily skews his numbers I'd think the per 100-possessions from last season is much better and more revealing gauge: almost 4 more FGA per/100 for Simons
Ok. By doing that you're stretching it out to longer than a game, because no player is on the court for 100 possessions per game, so it's a bit misleading. But even by that figure, we see he's just a touch below Jerami Grant, who calls his own number a lot.
I think another gauge would be the last 5 games from last season: 18.6 pts; 2.4 reb; 10.4 ast; 8.2 turnovers!! ratcheting down his turnover rate was paramount and the result has been encouraging
