I think to own a gun, you should have to have a background check that includes a mental health component. To carry, either open or concealed, I think we should have to get certified including actual target shooting tests and a requirement of a yearly refresher class and certain amount of logged hours at gun ranges. I'm not set on what the levels should be, but I think that if we carry, we should be proven competent. Most likely the yearly class would be a 6 hour course, 50% classroom and 50% range. The logged hours would be in the neighborhood of 25 hours a year or about 30 minutes per week.

I also think that there should be some requirement for people to at least own a gun safe or quality gun locks. But if we get those more sensible rules squared away, I don't think we need to have all the rules that are based on how scary guns look. Get rid of magazine restrictions, barrel length stipulations and handle type crap. Let people own and shoot what they want to as long as they have proven that they are responsible enough to 1) pass more detailed background checks and 2) be well trained on safety protocols and 3) be well trained on actually being able to hit what they are aiming at and not hit what they aren't.

By the way, cops should also have much more stringent testing qualifications.

very good post, not sure how you'd address ex military or rural populations with shooting ranges and classes though. the mental health aspect of gun ownership is a very very important issue. I agree 100% that education into gun safety should be taught across the board and think it should be taught as an elective course from middle school up but not mandatory. We have guns whether necessary or not and a lot of people are reckless with them.

There's a reason why they are able to sustain neutrality. There's a reason why Hitler did not attack Switzerland. Every man there is well versed in the use and maintenance of firearms. Why? Because every single man regardless of income must serve in the well regulated local militia.

Every man in our country should have to serve in the National Guard for 2 years. That is our well-regulated local militia.

The problem is every overweight gun nut that wants to carry his AR 15 to the local political rally seems to think that they can fight off our military...

i wish gun safety was offered in school, or better yet, parents weren't so shitty and educated their children. not too long ago some local kid here was taking slefies for facebook with his new gun, stuck the thing to his head and pulled the trigger. he thought it wasn't loaded, but of course it was. this kind of shit happens all the time because people are idiots. i took 10 minutes of gun safety from my old roommate when i bought my first gun because my parents were anti gun.
rule 1) the gun is ALWAYS loaded, treat it as such
rule 2)Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to kill or destroy
rule 3) finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
rule 4) be aware of your surroundings and if there is any doubt about what is behind the target do not shoot.
rule 5) if you point that gun at me or my dog you better shoot both of us because if i see it you're dead.

it's really simple. follow those 5 rules and you'll never kill yourself or another.

i wouldnt want to fight our military, my hope is they would not want to fight us and would rather fight the one who gave them the order to attack our own.

    Not at all.

All 3 contain the word "Allow" implying I need someone's permission.

I don't, and if I did it would be an infringement on my Second Amendment rights.

Nobody thought a bunch of dudes in black pajamas could fight off our military in Vietnam.

There's a reason why you don't want to get into guerrilla warfare against an insurgency. If it came down to our populace fighting against our military, it sure as hell wouldn't be a conventional war. It would be a dirty, horrible, muddy war.
