Can someone explain why Gary trent wasn't there today?
Because he is with the SL team in Vegas.
At least he didn't get Allan Crabbe money! We used most of our MLE to sign a 2nd round draft pick to a guaranteed contract and he is making $40k less per season than our 1st round draft pick? We're paying him more than 6 of the 1st round draft picks this year?

It's been that way for 2nd round picks for a few years now. The NBA needs to adress it in the next CBA but if Olshey didn't do it that way, Trent would be a free agent after 2 years. We used most of our MLE to sign a 2nd round draft pick to a guaranteed contract and he is making $40k less per season than our 1st round draft pick? Exactly this. And if he played well, a team could basically do what we did to Utah when we nabbed Matthews. It's been that way for 2nd round picks for a few years now. The NBA needs to adress it in the next CBA but if Olshey didn't do it that way, Trent would be a free agent after 2 years.

Nickle and dimeing these rookies or second pick is not the way to go with agents or give these young guns motivation.
Sly, you seem to be ignoring the CBA. If you give him the minimum you can only sign him to two years. If he's good then he'd get a big payday in year 3. If you pay more than the minimum you can sign him for 3 years. It's a little bit of a risk but you are banking on him being a steal in year 3 instead of a free agent.Matthews was undrafted. We hold Trent's draft rights. He can't play anywhere else in the NBA unless he takes what we're offering. Just seems like we offered more than the market, which seems like a pattern for Olshey. A pattern that is hurting our team.

This is actually super common with 2nd round picks now.
Gary has obviously impressed everyone at practice already...every player interviewed singled him out as a player...I think they want him for 3 years and will play him..Simons is not developed yet...although in the future Simons may become a special talent.

True it needed to be 3 years to gain the RFA status, and they had to use part of the MLE to do that...
However, years 2 & 3 did not have to be guaranteed & his salary did not have to be higher than the other 1st round picks.

Nope. Just have to use part of the MLE instead of the Minimum Exception. Is there a set amount or percentage beyond the minimum that we have to pay him to keep him for 3 years? I don't recall Jake Layman getting this kind of cheddar and this will be his 3rd year for the team.
