Portland head coach Nate McMillan said that Martell Webster had his "best game as a professional" last January when Webster defended Bryant and helped hold him to 14-for-37 shooting while chipping in 14 points and eight rebounds himself in a 107-98 win by the Trail Blazers.

Webster, who wears Bryant's signature sneaker as well as Bryant's former No. 8 on his uniform, could not hide his joy after the game, having beaten his idol.

Now with the Timberwolves after a draft-day trade, Webster made sure to get some face time with the Mamba when the practice floor exchanged hands between Los Angeles and Minnesota on Saturday.

"We talked about the triangle offense," Webster said. "I was asking him about different opportunities to score within the offense when you actually look to score in the paint. He was just telling me it's all about reads. It takes time to understand. So, when you go through practice, you see yourself in different scenarios where you can actually see yourself scoring, that's how you understand it. I never really thought about it like that, most people take practice for granted, but that's where you actually learn the triangle offense."

Webster was effusive in his praise of Bryant for taking the time.

"He's a legend," Webster said. "He's a playing legend right now. [Our] relationship right now, he's a teacher. He still plays the game, he understands the game and he's a teacher. I'm just trying to get as much knowledge as I can."

Martell webster sucks and I never wanted him in POR in the first place in 3....2....1..... :devilwink:

Nate praising Kobe during the Olympics
Martell idolizing Kobe
Blake becomes a Laker

Think the fans hate the Lakers more than the player do :ghoti:

this has been well known for a while. Brandon Roy was a lakers fan in college too.

the thing is that they're from seattle, which has some of the worst sports fans ever (other than in LA). they are total bandwagon dweebs, and there are a lot of L*ker fans or LeBron Heat fans, etc. whatever.

Who gives a shit? Martell has been working out with Kobe for years. I was happy he was working out with Kobe. Hoping against hope that some Kobe would rub off on him. Now? I truly couldn't give a shit. Martell doesn't play for Portland anymore, you know that, right?

Hey Rizzle, you heard that LeBron went to Miami and Bynum is hurt again, right? Oh, and there's a black president....

Meh...I dont pay attention to the thoughts of your JV players until its mentioned in a Lakers article :)

Dont forget to add that Brian Wheeler applied for Lakers announcer/broadcaster, and I dont hate Kobe... that has to be high up on that list too ;)

Why would the players hate the Lakers? Player-based rivalry is almost non-existent in pro sports. It's more common in college sports, but that's because it's clear you'll (almost) always be part of one team your entire college career. Plus college has been built up as a part of identity, far more than the company one works for.

Team-based rooting and "hate" has always been a fan thing. Kobe's a "fan" of the Lakers insofar as that's the team he's on and he wants to win. If he were a Celtic tomorrow, he'd want the Celtics to win.

I'm not surprised Webster is a big fan of Kobe. I'm sure lots of players are. Kobe is a fantastic player and great fun to watch.

I realize you consider yourself a clever troll, but your attempts to anger are pretty silly. ;)

Most of the Lakers hate is because of THEIR fans, who are the biggest jackasses in all of sports.

I mostly agree with you, though I certainly wouldn't label ALL their fans that way. But I would say the Lakers and Yankees fanbases are two of the most obnoxious in this generation. I don't actually dislike the players on the Lakers or the Yankees, but I tend to root against them due to the fans. :)

Red Sox fans are pretty douchey too as are patriot fans.

I remember 3 years ago after we got beat by LA down at Staples Martell walked on the plane with some autographed shoes from Kobe.......... DAMN! That flight was quiet! Jarrett Jack was PISSED!

Was that the game where he dropped 65 points? I left that game in a state of shock.

So was Webster asking K*be about his role in the triangle, or Artest's? :)

One thing I'll say for K*be, I don't think I've ever heard that he's turned down a player asking to work out with him or get some tips from him.

oh shit, he gave him the shoes he wore when he dropped 81.

On the flight to San Fransisco yesterday we watched the Lakers / Suns game on the plane. We started talking about Kobe Bryant, and how he and Martell Webster spent time together before the game against the Lakers on Friday. When we boarded the plane to head back to Portland, Martell was carrying a pair of Kobe's shoes, which were autographed. There was also a number written on the shoes- "81." I was told they were the shoes Kobe wore on the night he scored 81 points against Toronto. Needing a little further confirmation, I asked Martell himself last night in the lobby of our hotel in San Fransisco. Martell indeed said Kobe presented him with the shoes after the game on Friday, and that they were the shoes Kobe wore on the historic night. I asked Martell how often he speaks with Kobe, and he said they talk frequently, and that Kobe has invited him down to work out with him this summer in Los Angeles. Martell said he plans on doing it and is very excited about it.

Jack was pissed, I think Joel was to if i remember correctly. Shit, Jarrett was pissed when I wore some special edition LeBron Air Force 1's......... on an off day in Memphis!!!!

yeah. it was that game I think where he dropped 65. that was an amazing performance, i was pretty stunned.

I don't know of a single Blazers fan who wanted Martell Webster over Chris Paul or Deron Williams at the time of the draft. And yes, there are plenty of poster here who have been saying 'Martell Sucks' for the last three years.

It has been well known around these parts that Martell admires Kobe. He even went and trained with him after his rookie season.

Thanks for Trolling. It's always a pleasure.

Its fun watching the Lakers getting smoked by the lowly T-Wolves.

Wow. I'd be pissed too. What a douche, seriously. If your playing ball in this league you should be nobodies number 1 fan.

I'm glad we shipped his ass out of here for peanuts and cracker jacks.
