Gary Trent jr signed to guaranteed three year deal

So not the minimum. Guessing that's part of the MLE.

3 years seems reasonable. I don't expect him to play much as a rookie, but that gives him 2 more years to prove whether he is a keeper.

We used most of our MLE to sign a 2nd round draft pick to a guaranteed contract and he is making $40k less per season than our 1st round draft pick? We're paying him more than 6 of the 1st round draft picks this year?

That's a fair point. I was good with it being for 3 years - but why would you pay him more than players drafted ahead of him? It's not like Trent has a ton of leverage. This smacks of another case of NO doing a favor for an agent.

Then again, I can't begrudge him making as much as Simons when he is more likely to actually contribute.

It's been that way for 2nd round picks for a few years now. The NBA needs to adress it in the next CBA but if Olshey didn't do it that way, Trent would be a free agent after 2 years.

where did you see the salary figure?

Exactly this. And if he played well, a team could basically do what we did to Utah when we nabbed Matthews.

Matthews was undrafted. We hold Trent's draft rights. He can't play anywhere else in the NBA unless he takes what we're offering. Just seems like we offered more than the market, which seems like a pattern for Olshey. A pattern that is hurting our team.

The 200-300k per year that we are offering above Trent's market value is not the issue here. Nickle and dimeing these rookies or second pick is not the way to go with agents or give these young guns motivation. I don't have a problem with cutting 1 over paying vet (no.11) and over pay for a few of the young guys to give them extra motivation or appreciation to see what they have. Useless vets makes too much on our team. Not the rookies.

Motivation comes from being given a chance to play for his next contract. If he really needs to be overpaid to get motivated then that's a player you don't want near your roster.

Sly, you seem to be ignoring the CBA. If you give him the minimum you can only sign him to two years. If he's good then he'd get a big payday in year 3. If you pay more than the minimum you can sign him for 3 years. It's a little bit of a risk but you are banking on him being a steal in year 3 instead of a free agent.

This is actually super common with 2nd round picks now.

Gary has obviously impressed everyone at practice already...every player interviewed singled him out as a player...I think they want him for 3 years and will play him..Simons is not developed yet...although in the future Simons may become a special talent.

Is there a set amount or percentage beyond the minimum that we have to pay him to keep him for 3 years? I don't recall Jake Layman getting this kind of cheddar and this will be his 3rd year for the team.

It definitely seems like trend that NO likes to give 3 year contract to his second rounders but at a lower. Barton, Crabbe, Pat, Layman, Trent Jr. But they are all pretty high second rounders so maybe he see value in these guys and want to give them 3 years to see what they have.

True it needed to be 3 years to gain the RFA status, and they had to use part of the MLE to do that...
However, years 2 & 3 did not have to be guaranteed & his salary did not have to be higher than the other 1st round picks.

You're misreading those numbers. Simons is making over 1.5x as much per season (on average) as Trent Jr.

Simons $3,985,080 is over two seasons. That's an average of $1,992,540 per season.

Trent's $3,919,177 is over 3 seasons. That's an average of $1,306,392. So, Simons is making an average of 52% more per season.

Trent is locked in for the 3rd year at that rate. If the Blazers pick up the 3rd year team option on Simons, he will make will be $2,232,720 in his 3rd year. Simons' 4th year team option of $3,905,027 will be nearly as much as Trent's entire 3-year contract.

I swear sometimes people around here are just looking for something to bitch about. The headline of that article could have been better written (Trail Blazers second-rounder Gary Trent Jr. to receive higher salary guarantee than six first-rounders), but it did include the word guarantee, and if you actually read the article it's clear they are comparing 3 years salary for Trent to 2 years salary for everyone else.

It's not. Every single first round pick is making more per season than Gary Trent Jr.

Nope. Just have to use part of the MLE instead of the Minimum Exception.
You can still pay a player the 'minimum' and still use part of the MLE so that they can get the 3rd year.
