What are the players you think will be dead-cert many-year pros, whether or not they are ever stars? My guess is they include: Devin Vassell Tyrese Halliburton Saddiq Bey Malachi Flynn Tyler Bey Desmond Bane Xavier Tillman
Obi Toppin. I realize that his defense is suspect, he over-commits on the perimeter, he is extremely athletic but looks like he lacks lateral quickness but I think it's a lack of defensive awareness and understanding, he is constantly out of position, and he doesn't show effort consistently. That being said, he is extremely explosive athletically, he has the tools to be an effective defender at PF even against stretch 4s and in the pick and roll/pop action. He has shown really good low post defense, good against guys posting up, good as a strong side and weak side shot blocker and an effective rebounder. The fact is his defense won't keep him out of starting lineups because his offense is so special. He can shoot the three really well, he is great getting to the hoop, he finishes strong, he moves off the ball, he has a great first step to get by defenders... he's just really good on offense and that's why I think he is the least risky pick. His defense could get better but his offense isn't going to get worse. You know what this guy's floor is and it's high because he will be able to contribute meaningfully.
Terry, really? I like him a lot but he's (a) very small (although he has apparently grown an inch and put on 14 lbs since the end of the NCAA season), and (b) not especially athletic. I think of him as a bit of a gamble with a high reward.
I admit I don't watch nearly as much college basketball as many on here. I'll do a little scouting prep, and find guys I like. I really am struggling with Toppin. Which means he'll probably come in right away and be a dominant force, lol. I see a weird cross between a homeless man's Amare Stoudamire and a wealthy man's Kyle Kuzma.
Good list. Only guy I really question is Tyler Bey. Struggle with his lack of ballhandling, passing and overall decision making. His offensive role is going to change a lot as well which may make getting on the floor early in his career a little tougher for him. A bit raw fundamentally as a defender, esspecially when he gets tired which seems to happen quicker than normal. Basically, he's a guy that despite his strengths, I think NBA coaches may have a hard time trusting, which is a worry for a prospect his age. I'd add Okongwu to your list. Don't love his upside, but good enough in ballscreens and around the rim on both ends to be a solid pro for a long time.
Tyrell Terry screams nothing special. Tyler Bey's defense doesnt translate well to the NBA and he'll be a complete non-factor on offense.
