How high would you go to retain him?

Some example deals for free agents last year:

- Malik Beasley - 4yrs, 60 mil
- Davis Bertans - 5 yrs, 80 mil
- Bogdan Bogdanovic - 4 yrs, 72 mil
- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope - 3 yrs, 40 mil
- Jordan Clarkson - 4 yrs, 52 mil
- Goran Dragic - 2 yrs, 37 mil
- Danilo Gallinari - 3 yrs, 62 mil
- Jerami Grant - 3 yrs, 60 mil
- Joe Harris - 4 yrs, 72 mil
- Gordan Hayward - 4 yrs, 120 mil
- Marcus Morris - 4 yrs, 64 mil
- Fred Van Vleet - 4 yrs, 85 mil
- Christian Wood - 3 yrs, 41 mil

I would prefer a 3 yr deal, but 4/80 is probably what it will take to keep him. It's palatable, if we trade CJ.

Here's a different question: if he leaves, should that be it for Olshey?
No. The Norm situation should not have any impact on that determination.

It should have been 'it' for Olshey after the 2016 debacle.

Based on this list, the only two players I see who are clearly better players are Hayward & Wood (who is underpaid). There are several who I'd put in the same tier as Norm, and they are all making ~$20/yr. That is the right pay range for him.

Mostly agree with your list but FVV is better than Powell. Substantially better.

Have to keep Powell. Whatever it takes. There is no way to replace him.

If you can't keep Powell (or get similar value in a s&t) you start thinking about where Dame wants to go, because at that point we're cooked.

What if he doesnt want to be here?

Try to sign and trade him somewhere he wants to be a for a sizable TPE. Send a few seconds to facilitate the deal if you have to. Even if Norm doesn't want to play here I'm sure he doesn't hate the team. We've done right by him so the least he can do is do the team a solid by doing the S&T. It also benefits him if the Blazers work with him to get him somewhere he does want to go.

The Knicks are going to max him out. Just watch, you know they are :banghead2:

Seeing what Olshey gave Crabbe and Meyers, he's going to offer Powell as much as he possibly can.

“The first step to getting a ‘yes’ on a contract is getting a ‘yes’ on the market and town, so we want to show the best possible version of ourselves,” Olshey said. “We hope he wants to be here, and if he doesn’t, then it won’t be for lack of information.”

Norman is going into his prime so I believe he will consider where this franchise is at within his trajectory.

Only way I see Powell re-signing is if he knows CJ is gone. He could play the 3 in a pinch. But he’s a 2 guard. He doesn’t have anywhere near the size of most 3’s throughout the league.

Blow it up then if Jody keeps Neil?

I don't think the market will offer Norm a max contract. I was making a dig at Olshey on how he has overpaid players in the past.

No, it's not time to blow it up.

Let's see what a new coach can do.

That said, even a Pops caliber coach is not going to turn this roster into a championship contender.

The roster needs moves. Big moves. Moves that I have very little confidence that Olshey can and will make.

If he cant make room for Powell, and they sign him for 20 plus, were back to the 3 guard line-up that takes up a good portion of the cap.

We're cooked even if we keep him - just slow cooked.

I tired over paying players I would give him 4/60 4 year deal. He had good couple games in the playoffs but his defense didn't stand out as much as guys think. Maybe if playing the 2 he might be better but that's not going happen until CJ leaves.
