So, last we heard from the bubble in late August was that Zach had suffered "a hairline medial malleolus stress fracture of his left ankle" and would need surgery. Since then, as far as I can tell with a bunch of on-line searching is total crickets. Has anybody else heard if/when he had the surgery, what the timeline is to return to basketball activity, and if he's likely to be ready by opening night? Seems kind of odd for there to be so little news about a guy you'd think would be penciled in for a fairly significant role this year.

Here's a case study of a 16 year-old baseball pitcher who had the same injury. He was ready to return to baseball three months after surgery. You have to wonder if a guy as big as Zach, and who plays basketball, which involves more running and jumping than baseball, might take a longer time to heal enough to play.

Yes, it is a little weird to hear nothing. When Nurk was making strides, there were pics. Silence is not always peaceful.

Its been silent on all fronts really.

According to Holdahl he had surgery in September.

He probably be ready in January I believe it takes 3 months to heal and if that true then he should able to some work in December.

Zach I am still high on him just got re- watching the Philly game during the bubble and out of 17 shots that was shot against him they made 5. That shots from the outside all way to the rim. He always contesting shots that really have effect on a person shots. His rebounding average continue to improve every year and player that's has no plays that call for him he still managed 7 or 8 points a game. What I am saying he does a lot little things to help this team to win.

Could Zach remain injured or fall out of the league? Sure. I wouldn't guarantee a role or anything for him next year. We don't need to give him a stupid Meyers Leonard type extension.

However Zach could have value and is worth keeping. He could still be an effective role player for many years. When healthy he wasn't far off. His defense has been awesome at times. Gabriel was trash last year compared to Zach in the WCF run.

But it doesn't matter that he was a #10 pick... its a sunk cost. There are more #10 picks that become scrubs than become starters so it was never a guarantee of anything. So many fans can't seem to get over that. We don't hold it for or against Trent he was a second rounder, likewise we shouldn't hold it for or against Zach he was at #10. The only valid criticism with a players draft slot is on Olshey.

Your right it's not his fault he was drafted 10. But I fill he is pretty good role player and that's probably what he will ever be especially on this team. His offense will never be where everyone wants him to be due to how the offense structure around guard play and the PNR with the center. But after looking at these bubble games he started to set good screen that's leading our guards scoring on open looks and he getting his hands on offense rebounding to create 2nd opportunities. On defense he challenging shots that's causing misses all over the court and becoming better defense rebounder but this is his role on this team. He does have weakness too and one I see he likes to bring the ball down and gets stripped and needs continue to get stronger.

This is why we need Mike Barrett still working for the Blazers. We have no one to tell us how Collins has put on 20lbs of muscle and has never looked better.
They installed a super bionic ankle replacement and he now has a 70 inch vertical.

Woj makes it sound like Zach won't be ready by season start.
