Based on what? Nobody has seen him play except in a weird situation at LSU. From what few games I saw him play he seems like he can definitely handle the distributor role, it's his shot that's the question mark.

Boom or bust probably.

A few reasons but of course time will tell on this. Interesting experiment for sure.

He is good on the break finding people. I question whether he will have that same great vision in the half court game.

Defensively of course he isn't going to guard PGs full time. So who is? The SG on the team? Some matchups are really going to be a problem for the 76ers (of course this goes both ways, the other team will have trouble matching up in some games as well).
 
This (Simmons for Lillard) would be an impatient trade for the 76ers, but I get the impression they fired Hinkie because they got impatient. They have a very unbalanced roster and they need shooting in the worst way. Also they have no real (prototypical) PG, so would be tempted by Lillard (unlike many teams given the profusion of good PGs currently). It's not clear that Simmons would really work alongside Embiid, who has got to be their centerpiece going forward, whereas Lillard would complement him perfectly.

Meanwhile, for us, this would be an admission that it's a total rebuild. CJ would be our star-of-the-moment, but Simmons has a chance to be really special, like, much more special than Damian. Of course, he also has a chance to be a taller, even more injury-prone Ricky Rubio. As mentioned, his talents fit a running game better. But why can't we run? It's not like we have a settled roster that's good enough to dictate our style of play.

Presumably CJ, as our starters would likely be:
CJ, Crabbe, Harkless, Simmons, Plumlee (with possibly Turner instead of either Crabbe or Harkless)

Unless you're talking about for the 76ers, in which case I don't care.

I was talking for the 76ers (because you know, that is the team he will play for and I am not under any delusions that he is coming here) but I think the case is the same. The SG (whoever that would be) would have to play defense on the PG's that the 76ers play.
 
If Philadelphia would trade Simmons, I'd be all for it. I don't know if he'll be capable of consistently guarding either point guards or smaller shooting guards--he may have to be a point forward. But he has a lot of defensive potential to handle smaller players or bigger players on switches. In a switchier league, that's a pretty big deal.

Simmons could be another Antetokounmpo. He even comes into the league with a better shooting stroke than Giannis, so he could be even better.

It would be a gamble, but one I'd be happy to take because this core isn't going to contend for a title, in my opinion.
 
On knight:

An unnamed front office exec told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM’s John Gambadoro that there is virtually no trade market for Knight.
In order to rid himself on Knight’s contract, Suns GM Ryan McDonough will probably need to package a desirable young player or draft pick with him. Phoenix drafted two power forwards — Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender — and taking on Knight’s contract could be a stipulation for any team that desires one of those young bigs.

The Suns could alternatively try to boost Knight’s trade prospects by packaging a first-round pick. They’ll obviously have a juicy lottery pick this summer and don’t owe anyone a future first-rounder at the time being. They could also dangle the protected 2018 first-rounder that the Heat owe them.

If you're just trading terrible contract for terrible contract, Phoenix isn't going to give a pick, let alone a highly valuable one. To get the pick, a team will have to either absorb Knight's contract (through having cap space or by sending back expiring contracts) or else send back a good player making the same amount.

I don't think any team will take on that five year contract for just a pick, so Phoenix either needs to take back some contract not as bad or add more good stuff.

Possibly, though their pick is going to be really good in a loaded draft. Even if you're right, though, the contract would have to be much better than Knight's--Crabbe's and Leonard's are about equally bad. Leonard makes less, but isn't currently an NBA-caliber player.

It would be like the Cavs. LeBron is PG on offense and F on defense. The advantage is that you can play someone like Avery Bradley at "PG" who can't really distribute but can guard like a motherfucker and hit threes.

What did Magic Johnson use to do? Because he actually started in the PG slot, didn't he? Doubt very much that Simmons will, although Simmons is the closest thing to Magic since Magic (not even LeBron can throw passes like Simmons does).

76ers have no one like Avery Bradley, although I guess with their trade assets (picks and players) the could get him or someone close if a team was selling. Magic guarded SG's primarily but he also played Center that one famous game of course.

He only has 3 years left on his deal after this year, and their pick right now is top 3. I'd bet any team that could would take on his deal with little hesitation. Especially because knight is only 25and has shown he can score in the league.

Why are we considering Suns giving their 1st pick away for literally nothing as possibility? They're gone have a top5 pick in one of the most loaded drafts of all time. Hell they won't waste it just to get rid of Knight.

Is Knight's contract THAT bad? $12M for a backup comboguard is not that outrageous.

Because this is S2, and other teams are always lining up to get raped in a trade with the Blazers.

Don't worry, Neil is probably focusing on Len. Len fits what Olshey looks for; not good enough to make a big difference, but not bad enough to hate.
